Treatment of Gingivitis

What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums. During gingivitis there is intense red color of the gums (red gums) and swelling of the interdental papillae (gum between the teeth). Also the gums have a tendency to bleed (bleed). Finally bad breath can be due to gingivitis. However, if you treat it early, it can go away completely.

Our gums are what highlight the smile. Strong gums mean healthy teeth!

What we call gums is the mucous membrane that covers the alveolar process of the jaws, that is, the part of the bone that supports the roots of the teeth. Healthy gums are characterized by their pink color, absence of edema (swelling) and not bleeding in brushing or biting the apple. Gums that are swollen, red and tend to bleed easily indicate the presence of gingivitis, an extremely common condition with usually very unpleasant results.

What are the causes of gingivitis?

The most common cause of gingivitis is plaque that forms on the teeth. Other causes of gum inflammation include:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Smoking
  • Broken seals
  • Hormonal disorders or pregnancy
  • Stress
  • Poor diet
  • Misuse of toothbrush
  • Certain medicines

What are the symptoms of gingivitis?

The patient can understand that he has experienced gum inflammation from the following symptoms:

  • Swollen gums
  • Bright red or purple gums
  • Gums that hurt when the toothbrush touches it
  • Bleeding gums while brushing or flossing
  • Bad breath

In the event that one of the above symptoms is detected, it is advisable for the patient to contact his Dentist immediately so that he can be properly advised.

What does gingivitis treatment involve?

After the Dentist has performed a clinical examination, he will prescribe the appropriate treatment. The treatment also depends on the amount of inflammation in the gums. That is why an X-ray check is carried out. Deep cleaning at the dentist’s office is considered important for treating gingivitis. The Dentist will estimate how many times the patient will need to visit him for cleaning and maintenance.

Also, the patient will receive the corresponding advice for his oral hygiene as the Dentist can also refer him to the use of a special medicinal antiseptic. Medicines and antibiotics are given only after consultation with the doctor.

Treatment of gingivitis: Final result

Recovery takes a few days or weeks, depending on the degree of inflammation. Over time, the bleeding decreases during brushing and so does the pain. After the treatment recommended by the Dentist, the patient will feel and have a cleaner and lighter mouth.
