Frequent Questions

Orthodontics is the specialty of dentistry, which deals with the arrangement of the teeth in the dental arches and the guidance of the jaws in harmonious positions with each other, with the aim of restoring the good functioning of the mouth and the aesthetics of the face.
It is one of the recognized specialties of dentistry compared to all similar specialties of medicine. In order to practice orthodontics, in addition to the knowledge of the general dentist, special knowledge is required, which is acquired after the degree of the School of Dentistry in integrated postgraduate programs of domestic or foreign universities.

The title of Orthodontist is granted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare after examinations. Thus, only those who have the relevant certificate from the Ministry are entitled to bear the title of orthodontist.
The orthodontist, i.e. the now qualified dentist, deals exclusively with the subject of orthodontics.

Given that the orthodontic specialty has recently been recognized in Greece and the number of qualified orthodontists is limited, it is recommended that those interested in orthodontic treatment check beforehand, through the local Dental Associations, whether the Dentist they have addressed is a specialist Orthodontist.

Orthodontic treatment is considered necessary in cases with dental, skeletal and functional abnormalities of the mouth. The orthodontist is required to achieve one or more of the following goals as the case may be:

  • Proper mouth function (chewing, speaking)
  • Facilitation of oral hygiene, resulting in fewer future problems with the teeth and gums and a longer duration of their stay in the mouth. It is obvious the difference in the condition of the gums in the pictures below before and after the treatment.
  • Facilitation of the general dentist and other specialties as well as a better prognosis when performing dental work (fillings, bridges, dentures, gum and periodontal treatments) with the arrangement of the teeth and the functional restoration of the mouth.
  • Limiting the possibility of tooth fractures especially when they project outside the lips, especially in young people, as happened in the incident in the picture.
  • Limiting the possibility of problems occurring in the temporomandibular joint, i.e. the area where the lower jaw connects to the skull.
  • A beautiful smile and a more pleasant face consequently boosting the person’s self-confidence, as shown in the case below.

The American Orthodontic Association recommends the first examination with an orthodontist by age 7.

It is the period of time when the permanent teeth begin to emerge and replace the children’s teeth, while possible disharmony in the development of the jaws is likely to be diagnosed. In the case of diagnosing problems, the specialist orthodontist will judge whether they need to be treated by carrying out preventive treatment and the most appropriate time to start it.

Through preventive orthodontic treatment, the specialist orthodontist has the ability to:

  • to direct the growth of the jaws
  • to reduce the possibility of trauma in cases of severe protrusion of anterior teeth
  • Correcting harmful words
  • Improved appearance
  • Guiding the eruption of permanent teeth in the correct positions

An orthodontic examination at 7 does not imply immediate initiation of preventive orthodontic treatment. The treating specialist will decide whether or not it is required and when it will need to start.

  • premature or delayed loss of baby teeth
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • Synostosis, rare dentition or ectopic eruption of permanent teeth
  • Disharmony in the relationship of the jaws
  • Agenesis of one or more teeth
  • Increased horizontal projection
  • Convergence mismatches (crosswise convergence, telescopic convergence, etc.)

Below we present some examples.

  • Increased horizontal projection
  • Anterior cruciate
  • Prognathism of the lower jaw
  • Deep show
  • Renewed index
  • Concentration
  • Periodontia

During the orthodontic treatment, the patient needs to avoid chewing: nuts, seeds, candies, ice cubes and generally anything hard.

The actual cost of an orthodontic treatment varies widely, depending on the severity of the problem as well as the mechanisms that will be chosen. Since orthodontic treatment lasts an average of 18 months, it is possible to agree on a comfortable payment method with monthly installments during this period. When considering the cost of orthodontic treatment, don’t forget the long-term benefits of a beautiful, healthy smile.

Endodontic treatment (denervation) is the removal of the contents of the pulp cavity, its cleaning and shaping of the root canal in a suitable shape so that it can be hermetically sealed with some biologically compatible material.
The purpose of endodontic treatment is to remove the organic remains of the pulp and the microbial load of the root canals and to hermetically seal them.

In the event of failure of an endodontic treatment and in the inability to repeat it or in the event that the repetition of the endodontic treatment also fails, we resort to Surgical Endodontics.
Surgical Endodontics is the set of surgical actions that aim to complement conservative endodontic treatment. Surgical access is through the soft tissues and bone surrounding the root of the tooth.

Apical rhizectomy is a technique in which a part of the end of the root approximately 2-3 millimeters long (apical root) is cut off and removed, which is then inverted with special biocompatible materials.

In cases of failure, alternative treatments include conservative repeat endodontic treatment, surgical endodontics (acrorrhizectomy) or extraction of the offending tooth.

Many factors influence the progress of endodontic treatment. Of decisive importance is the initial condition for which the endodontic treatment was performed, the perfection of the endodontic treatment and the subsequent molar restoration, as well as the general and oral health of the patient.

The tooth is often weak and it is necessary for its protection to be restored soon by your dentist. It is often preferred to make a bezel (case). Until the restoration it is better not to bite hard on this tooth, but after it you can use it normally.

Endodontic treatment has a high probability of success. the success rates for endodontic treatments carried out by an Endodontist reach 85-95% in the literature. However, it should be noted that it is impossible to absolutely guarantee the success of any medical or dental treatment.
Even after performing the best possible treatment, healing may not occur due to circumstances beyond the dentist’s control and responsibility. If this happens further treatment may be needed to clear the infection.

Each case is unique. Most endodontic treatments are completed in two or three visits, which take place over a period of one or two weeks. Some cases can be successfully completed in one session. The number of sessions required to complete an endodontic treatment depends on the microbial load of the root canals, the clinical symptoms of the patient and the degree of difficulty of the case.
After the completion of each session, the dentist seals the access cavity with a temporary occlusive material, which ensures the tightness of the p.s. and enables the patient to use it normally.

Endodontic treatment during its stages is not painful. It is usually done under anesthesia. Sometimes after the end of each stage there is discomfort that worsens with chewing. This discomfort lasts from 1-3 days and is controlled with painkillers and less often with anti-inflammatory drugs.
